Assessments

Home

Assessments are done by teachers to evaluate their students' academic performance throughout the academic year (Glossary of education reform, 2015). There are different types of assessments that can be implemented in the classroom by the teachers which carry different purposes during and after instruction such as Pre-assessment or diagnostic assessment, Formative assessment, Summative assessment, Confirmative assessment, Norm-referenced assessment, Criterion-referenced assessment, and Ipsative assessment (Click here to read more). Assessments are vital to know students' understanding of the focused area, follow their learning process, evaluate if the learning objective was achieved or not (GLEF, 2008).

  • Anecdotal notes are used to record observations of each child in the classroom such as behaviors, skills, and attitudes. I developed in recording anecdotal notes by providing a growing information on students' learning, direction for future instructions, and scaffolding them in specific areas of struggles. I found out by writing anecdotal notes I could provide ongoing records about each child's needs to catch up with the learning and show their best performance academically.

  • The spreadsheet allows the teacher to enter the names of the students and the LO for each lesson where she can grade the children according to their goal met. I developed an excel spreadsheet over my teaching practice days for my lessons. By doing that I was able to follow out students performance throughout a period of time. I learned that Spreadsheets are effective to gradually increase the teaching and learning at the same time because I was able to find students' areas of struggles.

Assessments are making judgments about something or someone. They are essential in the Early childhood classroom. Teachers identify students’ skills or their accomplishments of the learning objectives by formative assessments (Education reform, 2014). Wiliam and Thompson state that teachers need to identify the levels of their students and what they need to achieve their goals. Teachers use formative assessment by giving feedback to move them to a certain level (Black, & Wiliam, 2009). “The intention of formative assessment as being ‘to give constructive feedback to learners’ and ‘a crucial part of the educational process” (Dixon & Ecclestone, 2003, P.115). Overall, formative assessments in the ECE classroom are done by teachers to evaluate the students using different strategies. In our action research project, we will collect data on formative assessments strategies used in the UAE government kindergarten.
