I believe that children learn more through play and exploring their environment and this follows Piaget’s theory that “Children learn through play” (Enose, 2010). Hands-on activities, cooperative learning, and unstructured learning allow children to learn fast in an effective way. Based on my experience, children learn better when they build on their previous knowledge because by building on previous knowledge children can make links to learn more. Bruner had the theory of the spiral curriculum which emphasis that children move from a level to another level by building on the current level (Zhongwen, 2016). From my standpoint, each child has different ways of learning. Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences is that each child has his own multiple intelligence which causes that each child learns in way (Joan, 2014). Multiple intelligences and different learning styles should be considered by the teacher to pull them up in her teaching to make the learning and the teaching effective and visible to all the students in the classroom. From my perspective, children learn in an interactive environment and that is what Vygotsky mentioned in his theory that children learn differentby interactive instructions, materials and activities (Irina, 2010). Interactive environment allows the children to discover new things on their own which is the key to children’s learning.
Effective teaching requires knowing the different levels of the students in the classroom because by then all the students will be engaged in the lesson and the most important is that the lesson will be visible to the whole group of children without exception. Based on my experience, using different teaching strategies allows effective teaching and learning to happen at the same time. Different teaching strategies cover most of the students learning styles which means each child will get the opportunity to learn in their own style or way.
According to my Experience, having goals set up for the children to achieve our expectations are important for the teacher to see the change. I expect that each child will progress at least one level in academic achievement in all areas. Children will also learn about working in groups and independently. Each child will be able to build a feeling of success academically and socially. In my opinion, Children should challenge themselves to grow and develop.
The classroom learning environment has a huge impact on children’s learning and achieving goals. In my opinion, the classroom should make the children feel safe and secure as their second home. Moreover, the classroom should allow the children to support their natural curiosity and desire to learn. It happens if there are several areas provided in the classroom as learning centers full of resources that allows the children to discover things and make up new rules in their minds about life.
Being a teacher does not mean that I have one role which is teaching, but there are several roles that I should play besides being a teacher such as resource provider, instructional specialist, planner, classroom supporter, learning facilitator, mentor, catalyst for change and a learner as well (Cindy & Joellen, 2007).
Improving myself as a teacher is important to get better effective teaching and learning going on. In my opinion, browsing about new teaching strategies, reading books about teaching and learning and viewing teachers’ websites are inessential as a self-developing method. Based on my experience, observing other teacher teaching and dealing with the students is effective in teaching progress. You can figure out new methods in teaching or give some comments on what went wrong. In that way, not only students’ performance is going to progress, but teachers also will be able to improve themselves too. I believe that attending extra courses to get ideas and ways to improve teaching and learning is effective too to improve myself as a teacher. In my teaching, I want to introduce the 21st-century skills by applying communication tools and including technology in the classroom for my lessons. Also, use cooperative learning to increase students performance.
